Go to Tibet
Ride a camel.
Read the bible.
Dye your shoes blue.
Grow a beard.
Circle the world in a paper canoe.
Subscribe to The Saturday Evening Post.
Chew on the left side of your mouth only.
Marry a woman with one leg and shave with a straight razor.
And carve your name in her arm.
Brush your teeth with gasoline.
Sleep all day and climb trees at night.
Be a monk and drink buckshot and beer.
Hold your head under water and play the violin.
Do a belly dance before pink candles.
Kill your dog.
Run for mayor.
Live in a barrel.
Break your head with a hatchet.
Plant tulips in the rain.
But don’t write poetry.
Charles Bukowski
~~~~~
I love this poetry so much.
Not because I’m a Bukowskian,
but because it’s my eternal reserve of inspiration
for days when the heart’s sore and the mind surly.
WoW!!! this is fantastic……i have read very little so of the great writers…….whenever i come across such amazing poems i am so much tempted to just run away with a libraryu and just spend my whole life reading……….maybe the reason why i haven’t started reading them more is because, i am afraid i might do that…… 🙂 🙂
I second. I find it hard to leave a library for the same reasons as you but these days I’m stuck in front of the laptop and soaking in the thoughts scribbled by poets and writers, eons ago. And you sit there, and are awestruck by their compositions. But sitting in front of a gadget than a book has its limitations and you can read for only so long.
exactly……e-books do nothing for me……it’s like kryptonite……can only be lesser than ordinary……i still first write, a least my poems, on a paper before typing.
Bingo! I follow the same. Somehow the words, the feeling of writing seems different on paper than on screen. Plus, I absolutely love striking out words and making special markings above the crossed-out ones. 😛
you said it……there is nothing like that…….and on screens it always seems so disconnected, ironically…. 🙂 🙂
Well, yes, that’s right. And I hate it when my eyes beg to leave the screen and seek some visual comfort physically.
ere we all have ups
and downs trials of life
tribulations all
kind words boost my heart
overflowing gratitude
streaming on its way
it’s my life till summer
mid winter spring inclusive
hark inspiration’s
bird song flapping wings
ventriloquistical reed beds
nature throwing sound
words oft come easy
begging to be transcribed
guess i am lucky
still seeking natures wisdom
learning curves love to study
i know i’ve thanked you
but you pulled the plug cant stop
words flow with feeling
letters picked randomly
fingertips transcribing
sorting word for word
not done
yet a cuppa calls
thirsty words
Take care,
Mick
PS Will post these to my blog, look out for a pingback………..
The great poet was right. Live, travel, test life and sing many songs ,dance many dances, know the taste of love, then write.
I follow his poetries, Ruma. As for his novels, you need a certain taste, a particular inclination. I read WOMEN and can’t say I like it. POST OFFICE is more a biographical work. So that’s all right. You may have to test to see what you like.
