21 Delightful Books For the Rainy Day Reader

Monsoons are finally here and it’s the only time when the city is draped in breath-taking exquisiteness. Each one of us has our own special way of relishing the charm that monsoons are. Some would say – a cozy spot by the window with a view of the lush greens beyond, a cup of ginger tea, a bite or two of a savoury snack – are the essentials for a rainy day. But bookworms would say the list remains sadly incomplete. After all, “What’s a rainy day without a good book!”

What are some of the best books to read on a rainy day?

If you too have tried to Google that and haven’t come across a decent recommendation, your search ends here. Being the good bookworm that I am, I have put together a fantastic list of books that covers various genres, authors, formats, etc. to complement your rainy mood. I prefer light, engaging reads, myself. Books that would keep me intrigued but also mesmerized, leaving me in a sensuous bliss; while I enjoy the chill of the weather, are my favorite rainy day reads. That’s exactly what you can expect from my list.

Nadia, a wildlife biologist researching geese, travels to Mongolia, where she tags two geese: Blue Sky and White Cloud. As the birds fly southwards over the Himalayas, she meets Vivek, India’s Minister of State for Environment. Their instantaneous friendship soon takes Vivek to a lush valley at the base of the soaring Himalayas, where he must make a decision that will impact the lives of all around him.

A rich, successful Moscow professor befriends a stray dog and attempts a scientific first by transplanting into it the testicles and pituitary gland of a recently deceased man. A distinctly worryingly human animal is now on the loose, and the professor’s hitherto respectable life becomes a nightmare beyond endurance. An absurd and superbly comic story, this classic novel can also be read as a fierce parable of the Russian Revolution.

Michael, an angel from heaven, is punished by God for not following God’s bidding and is sent to earth. Michael is set a task to find answers to God’s 3 questions, only then can he return. What follows is a heart-touching tale, one narrated from the angel’s perspective. Written in Tolstoy’s classic style, it teaches us just how important is to love, to forgive, to understand, to obey, and finally, not look down upon one.

The farcical tale of Jeremy Garnet, an author and an old friend of Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, an erstwhile chicken farmer. Upon meeting Ukridge for the first time in years, Garnet finds himself enmeshed Ukridge’s new and struggling chicken farm. Garnet soon falls in love with a girl living near the estate as he struggles with the farm and with Ukridge’s bizarre business methods.

When Dr John Watson takes rooms in Baker Street with amateur detective Sherlock Holmes, he has no idea that he is about to enter a shadowy world of criminality and violence. Accompanying Holmes to an ill-omened house in south London, Watson is startled to find a dead man whose face is contorted in a rictus of horror. Gipsy’s Acre was a truly beautiful upland site with views out to sea – and in Michael Rogers it stirred a child-like fantasy. There, amongst the dark fir trees, he planned to build a house, find a girl and live happily ever after. Yet, as he left the village, a shadow of menace hung over the land. For this was the place where accidents happened. Perhaps Michael should have heeded the locals’ warnings: ‘There’s no luck for them as meddles with Gipsy’s Acre.’ Michael Rogers is a man who is about to learn the true meaning of the old saying ‘In my end is my beginning.’
