16 Motivational Quotes from ‘The Lord of the Rings’

The Lord of the Rings continues to remain not just my most-read novels but also most-admired and most-recommended books of all times. I’m never not fascinated by how much greatness and diligence; married with unmatchable creativity, is contained within its pages; no matter how many times I read it.

There’s much to learn from Tolkien’s magnum opus. From Bilbo, to Frodo, to Aragorn, to Samwise, to Gandalf, to Gollum, to Elrond, the characters embody such vices and virtues, that makes the reading experience such a rich, thrilling journey for the reader. It isn’t for nothing that the book has inspired the greatest of artists, since generations.

Brimming with courage, wisdom, chivalry, love, passion, compassion, comraderie, candor, bravery, righteousness, humanity, and so much more, there’s a lot to take away from the story of the Baggins’ of the Shire and the Middle-east created by Tolkien. Here are the top quotes from part 1 of the Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring – that we all must read and imbibe, now more than ever.

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

“Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”

“Short cuts make long delays.”

‘You can trust us to stick with you through thick and thin–to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours–closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo.”

“Don’t adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on on the story.”

“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future”

“For we put the thought of all that we love into all that we make.”

“Have you thought of an ending?”
“Yes, several, and all are dark and unpleasant.”
“Oh, that won’t do! Books ought to have good endings. How would this do: and they all settled down and lived together happily ever after?”
“It will do well, if it ever came to that.”

“Not all those who wander are lost”

“There is still hope.”

“Memory is not what the heart desires.”

“Do not trouble your hearts overmuch with thought of the road tonight. Maybe the paths that you shall each tread are already laid before your feet, though you do not see them.”

“There are many things in the deep waters; and seas and lands may change. And it is not our part here to take thought only for a season, or for a few lives of Men, or for a passing age of the world. We should seek a final end of this menace, even if we do not hope to make one.”

“As the story grew, it put down roots into the past and threw out unexpected branches.”

“Darkness must pass; a new day will come, and when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer.”

“I pity snails, and all that carry their homes on their backs.”

“But good luck to you – today and every day!”
