Many readers assumed that 1Q84 ended with Book 2. Two main parts with two main characters, Aomame and Tengo, are followed concurrently. This story also provides context for some serious incidents in Japan. Little People in this book is sometimes compared to Big Brother in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.

The protagonist, who is more of a narrator, falls in love with a girl named Sumire at university. However, she has a crush on someone else, and they are drifting apart. The book’s title is derived from the Soviet Union’s 1957 spacecraft launch.

Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are vanishing cats and smoky bars, lonely hearts and mysterious women, baseball and the Beatles, woven together to tell stories that speak to us all. Marked by the same wry humor that has defined his entire body of work, in this collection Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic.

The Birthday Girl

The birthday girl by Haruki Murakami

She waited on tables as usual that day, her twentieth birthday. She always worked Fridays, but if things had gone according to plan on that particular Friday, she would have had the night off.

One rainy Tokyo night, a waitress’s uneventful twentieth birthday takes a strange and fateful turn when she’s asked to deliver dinner to the restaurant’s reclusive owner.

Birthday Girl is a beguiling, exquisitely satisfying taste of master storytelling, published to celebrate Murakami’s 70th birthday.

The Elephant Vanishes

The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami

When a man’s favourite elephant vanishes, the balance of his whole life is subtly upset; a couple’s midnight hunger pangs drive them to hold up a McDonald’s; a woman finds she is irresistible to a small green monster that burrows through her front garden; an insomniac wife wakes up to a twilight world of semi-consciousness in which anything seems possible—even death. In every one of the stories that make up The Elephant Vanishes, Murakami makes a determined assault on the normal. He has a deadpan genius for dislocating realities to uncover the surreal in the everyday, the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Murakami’s works are known for their contrasting narratives, complex characters, and stunning displays of magical realism. These are just a few of Haruki Murakami’s best-selling books. His work has been translated into over 50 languages with millions of copies sold worldwide. I hope this post encourages you to add his books to your reading lists.
